Portable generators offer most everything you would need for home backup, RV & camping use, or commercial jobsite use, in a smaller and more cost-effective package.

But before you start comparing models or shopping prices, we highly recommend to first identify your power needs. This helps you select the portable generator that is right for you. You can then shop different models to find one that fits your budget.

To do so, start by looking around your home and figure out which appliances or gadgets you really must have when the power goes out. Write everything that uses power in your home down, and put them into 2 groups:

  1. Must-have items (like your fridge and lights)
  2. Would-like-to-have items (like a dishwasher)

Once you’ve done this, visit our power calculation page to total up total power needed

You can then make your own judgment call as to which appliances you really want to pay the price for to power up in case of an outage.

Portable generators fall into several categories:

  1. Gas Portable Generators: These are by far the most commonly used portable generators on the market. As a result, they are often the most cost effective, as you can shop around and get a good bargain.
  2. Gas Portable Generators (Inverters): These are referred to as “digital” generators. They are essentially the same as regular gas generators, but utilize inverter technology to produce power. This means a much quieter portable generator, cleaner power output and improved performance. They are higher in price than standard open-frame portable generators. But if you have sensitive electronics, it is a small price to pay to keep your equipment safe. Additionally, the noise reduction is enough to justify the price increase.
  3. Propane Portable Generators: These are becoming more common. They offer the advantage of less maintenance (no carburetor issues to deal with), better for the environment, and ultimately cheaper to operate. They tend to be slightly higher in price than gas generators, typically 15% to 25% more.
  4. Diesel Portable Generators: These generators are not commonly used for residential applications, but are often used for commercial jobsite. They are typically even higher in price than propane portable generators (about 25-35% more than gas portable generators), but offer longer product life and stronger performance. .
